Applied Building Science believes that everyone deserves home and work environments that are safe, healthy, durable, energy-efficient, affordable and comfortable. A better sealed, ventilated & insulated building envelope by Applied Building Science will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat & cool your home or business, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by fossil fuel use.

Comfort & Energy EvaluationApplied Building Science can begin the process with a comprehensive, yet affordable*, whole-house evaluation. It combines a rigorous physical inspection of the building envelope with some of the latest problem-solving technology such as the blower door or infrared camera. The assessment (sometimes called an Energy Audit) pinpoints sources of high energy consumption and health and comfort issues such as drafts, cold or hot rooms, insulation, frozen pipes, moisture, heat loss, or ventilation. The data is analyzed and a proposal generated to determine your home's optimum performance, options and costs for a customized solution.

Air-Sealing — most homes are poorly sealed and have air infiltration and ex filtration problems. This can account for up to 30% of a home’s heating and cooling energy bills. Applied Building Science thoroughly seals cracks, crevices and holes in the interior and exterior of the home. This includes recessed lights that can account for between $5 and $30 each in annual energy loss due to air leakage, and dump 1/3 of a gallon of moisture into the attic.

Insulation — many homes are poorly insulated or missing insulation entirely. Applied Building Science installs high performance, eco-friendly cellulose insulation in walls, overhanging floors, and attic space to ensure the home has strong thermal protection. Our “Densepack” method into wall & ceiling cavities delivers impressive air barrier and noise suppression results as well.

Ventilation — Air seal tight. Insulate & ventilate right! Yet, it’s not uncommon to find a poorly ventilated attic, or bathroom fans dumping moisture-laden air directly onto attic insulation.  Applied Building Science goes to great “heights” to install the proper roof, soffit and fan venting products to keep the attic cool & dry and the roof structurally sound.

Crawl Spaces — many homes have damp, musty and cold crawl spaces. When moisture condensation on wood reaches certain levels, conditions are ripe for mold growth, structural damage and health issues.  Applied Building Science’s crawl space protection system combines durable moisture & radon-resistant covering on the earthen floor with an insulating foam barrier on the walls.

Replacement Windows — new windows usually don’t deliver as much energy savings as other home improvements. Many can be re-weatherstripped or storm windows installed. Applied Building Science frequently replaces old and leaky windows with ENERGY STAR-approved windows to increase the beauty and value of a home, increase comfort, and protect furniture and carpets from fading.

Upgrading Lighting and AppliancesApplied Building Science always recommends replacing the lighting in high use areas with low energy consuming lights, and often recommends upgrading old and inefficient home appliances to new ENERGY STAR-rated appliances.
